The First Taste of Christmas; Julmust Has Arrived

There is a moment when the seasons begin to change, and in Sweden, it often arrives in a bottle. The days grow shorter, the windows begin to glow, and somewhere between the first Advent decorations and the first Christmas shopping lists, a familiar dark, sparkling drink finds its way back onto the table. Julmust is here. And for many Swedes, that is when Christmas really begins.

It is difficult to explain just how closely Julmust is tied to Swedish Christmas unless you have grown up with it. It is more than another seasonal soft drink. It belongs to the same familiar collection of traditions as pepparkakor, saffron buns and the Christmas ham. It appears at family dinners, festive gatherings and on the traditional julbord, shared by children and adults alike. Its distinctive taste, with notes of malt, hops and spices, is unlike almost anything else, and somehow it tastes even better when December is approaching.

The story began in 1910 in Örebro, where Robert Roberts and his son Harry developed a non-alcoholic alternative to the beer traditionally served at Christmas. What started as a different kind of festive drink gradually became one of Sweden's most recognisable seasonal traditions. The original flavour extract remains a closely guarded family secret, and more than a century later, Julmust continues to hold its place at the heart of Swedish Christmas celebrations.

And now, the first bottle of the season has arrived at Swedishness. We are starting our Christmas collection with Apotekarnes Julmust, a familiar name for anyone who knows Swedish festive traditions. It felt like the natural first addition. Before the gingerbread, the saffron, the chocolates and all the little things that make December special, there is Julmust. A small reminder that the holiday season is just around the corner.

This is only the beginning. More Christmas favourites and seasonal products will be making their way into our store over the coming weeks, bringing a little more of Sweden's festive atmosphere to your home, wherever you happen to be celebrating.

For now, we are starting with a classic. Because some traditions don't need reinventing. They just need to find their way back to the table.
