Some Journeys Begin with a Scent
You are walking down a street when a door opens. For a moment, there is warm butter, cinnamon, a little cardamom. You slow down. Somewhere you haven't been for years suddenly feels close.
A scent becomes connected to what we feel when we encounter it. The place, the company, the moment. Meet it again years later, somewhere entirely different, and it can become a doorway back—not only to what we remember, but to how we felt.
Coffee takes you into a familiar kitchen. Rain on warm ground brings back a childhood summer. The faintest trace of someone’s fragrance returns the feeling of being close, of knowing them with your eyes closed.
Without taking a step, we can travel across years and miles, carried by something we cannot hold or even see. We can miss those scents as much as the places and people themselves. And sometimes, finding them again is the nearest we can come to returning.
Cinnamon has its own journeys to offer. A Swedish café. An afternoon around a crowded table. Warm a bun, or make your own with flour and butter, cinnamon and cardamom, and let the fragrance fill the kitchen. At Swedishness, you'll find both the buns and the ingredients.
On 4 October, we celebrate Cinnamon Bun Day. There will be coffee, cinnamon, and something warm to share.
Some journeys begin with a scent. If you could follow one back, where would you go? What moment would you return to? And who would be there?
