🐣 Påsk Kladdkaka: The Ultimate Swedish Easter Dessert

What’s better than chocolate cake? A Swedish Kladdkaka dressed up for Easter with pastel-colored candy eggs, of course!

At Swedishness, we’re all about celebrating Scandinavian traditions with a fun and modern twist. Kladdkaka is a beloved Swedish classic—rich, gooey, and incredibly simple to make. This version is perfect for Påsk, Sweden’s springtime Easter celebration filled with colorful feathers, playful witches, and, of course, massor av godis (loads of candy).

Let’s dive into this irresistibly sticky dessert that will be the star of your Påskbord (Easter table).

Ingredients

For the cake:

150g butter

3 eggs

3 dl (1¼ cups) sugar

1½ dl (⅔ cup) all-purpose flour

1 dl (½ cup) unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp vanilla sugar (or ½ tsp vanilla extract)

A pinch of salt

For the topping:

Whipped cream (optional but highly recommended)

1 dl chopped milk or dark chocolate

A handful of colorful påskgodisägg (Easter candy eggs)

Optional: Edible flowers or pastel sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).

Melt the butter and let it cool slightly.

In a bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar—no need to overwhip, just combine.

Stir in the flour, cocoa, vanilla, salt, and finally the melted butter.

Pour the batter into a greased and floured springform pan (about 22–24 cm).

Bake for about 15–20 minutes. The edges should be set but the center should still feel sticky—don’t overbake!

Let cool, then remove from the pan.

Decorate with whipped cream, chopped chocolate, and scatter your godisägg over the top. Voilà!

💡 Tips from the Swedishness:

This cake is even better the next day —just store it in the fridge and let it come to room temperature before serving.

Want to go all in? Serve with a side of Swedish vanilla sauce (vaniljsås) or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Use Swedish candy eggs like Marabou Mjölkchokladägg, Polly Påskägg, or import-style Dragéägg for the most authentic touch.
